I read this morning that Plymouth Argyle have appointed Peter Ridsdale “football advisor” to the board to help the Pilgrims through this perilous time. I didn’t know too much about Ridsdale, the name seems familiar but I could not work out why so I enlisted the help of Wikipedia. Where I find that he was instrumental in the downfall of Leeds and Barnsley as well as presiding over Cardiff’s financial troubles. Why on Earth would the Argyle board look to a man that seems to have no financial intuition when it comes to running football clubs, taking huge financial risks on events happening in the future, see Leeds United fall from grace. I don’t see how hiring a man with such a bad past history with football clubs could possibly help the struggling club? Out of frying pan into the fire! Meanwhile Plymouth could not continue their two game winning streak being held to a 1 – 1 draw with Notts County at Home Park. All the goals came in the first seven minutes, Stephane Zubar got his first goal for Argyle in the fourth minute but that was cancelled out three minute later with Lee Hughes tapping in after Alan Judge hit the woodwork from outside the 18 yard box. At least the supporters came out in relative force; almost 10,000 watched the lacklustre draw in the fog. Plymouth currently sit in 15th place, four points from the top six and also four points from the bottom three. Two or three good wins on the trot could change the fortunes of most of the teams in League One this season, it’s very tight, there is very little margin between getting promoted and relegated, just 20 points cover the entire league! As I was writing this entry, I recieved a tweet saying that one of our best players; Craig Noone is to hold talks with league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion. Looks like Noone is off to pastures new to help raise cash to pay off the tax debt that Argyle have amassed! I can’t help but feel that Bradley Wright-Phillips will be the next to leave. I just can’t help feeling that even if the Pilgrims survive their financial troubles, League Two football is a certainty without Wright-Phillips and Noone; will Peter Reid stay if Argyle get relegated because of having to sell his top players!
Roy Hodgson is also under pressure after Liverpool slumped to a 0 – 1 defeat to bottom club Wolves in front of the Kop faithful. Former Argyle player Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was instrumental in Liverpool’s defeat providing the pass for Steven Ward’s goal. This result leaves Liverpool in 12th place in the Premiership; a massive 12 points off the top four; not where the Reds should be! With the news of Rafa Benitez’s dismissal from Inter-Milan; maybe Liverpool could offer the Spaniard a position back at Anfield; Roy Hodgson is not going to get the job done. I believe a return for Benitez would boost morale at Anfield massively, but I doubt that it will happen.
[Update: 30/12/10 10:38] Plymouth Argyle have accepted a bid for winger Craig Noone, the fee is as yet undisclosed but I can’t help feeling that Gus Poyet got a bargain given the dire straights Argyle find themselves in. This is disastrous news for Argyle fans as Noone is one of our best playmakers, scored four goals this season and provided opportunities for countless others, very disappointing indeed! I genuinely fear for the future of Plymouth Argyle Football Club!
