This weekend marks the beginning of the Euro 2004 championships, and the host nation Portugal got off to an abysmal start to their campaign losing 2 – 1 to underdogs Greece, although all the English fans knew what a threat the Greek team are, and Portugal underestimated them and paid the price. In the second game, it was a more predictable result with Spain beating Russia 1 – 0, but the surprise was the Russians game, creating several clear cut chances, but couldn’t convert them into goals, but a good showing from the Russians.
In Formula One, Jenson Button was pipped to the post by Williams’ driver Ralf Schumacher at the last minute by 6 hundredths of a second, but Jenson isn’t too disappointed as he is still on the front row, hopefully he can convert that into a win. Jenson’s team-mate Takuma Sato could have joined him on the front row, if it wasn’t for a spin at the last corner. The shock of the session was that the Ferrari’s of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were 6th and 7th places respectively, more than a second off the pace, and behind both the Williams’ and Renaults’, maybe this will be an end to the Ferrari dominance this season, I really hope so as its getting pretty boring and its only half way through the season.
More motorsport, this weekend is the annual running of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, and the Audi’s haven’t had it all their own way, with two of the Audi’s cars spinning off the track on oil at 160 miles per hours, even more amazing is that both cars recovered to the pits, and the mechanics repaired the cars to look like new in just 30 minutes. Colin McRae made his debut in the Le Mans driving a Ferrari 550 Maranello, made a few rookie mistakes, but it was a good showing from the Scot.
