What a great day of football

The score line that counts is 3 – 0 to England against Switzerland, but the score line flattered England really, for 75% of the game England looked decidedly ordinary, just as well the Swiss weren’t up to taking the game to England really, they never really looked like scoring. Hero of the hour was Wayne Rooney, what can you say about this guy, 18 years old, and probably is the best English striker in the game at the moment. He scored England’s first two goals, although the second was more of a fluke, hitting the upright then bouncing off the Swiss goalkeepers head into the back of the net. Final goal was from Steven Gerrard to redress his mistake in the France game. Michael Owen had another lacklustre game; his only real contribution was setting Rooney up for his first goal. I think that it may be better to play Darius Vassell alongside Rooney from the start, also replace Paul Scholes with Wayne Bridge on the left wing, and put Ledley King back in defence, and maybe use Scholes and Owen as substitutes.

France were lucky to get away with a 2 – 2 draw against Croatia, although France did look the better team in the first half, even then it took a bizarre own goal for France to take the lead. But the second half was a different story with Croatia looking the stronger team, scoring two goals in four minutes, first being a penalty, and the second a rocket from the boot of Pršo, which stunned the French. But the French managed to level the scores 12 minutes courtesy of Trezeguet. But the French had to fight for the draw, as the Croatians were bombarding the French goal and were unlikely not to take the win two minutes into injury time. After this performance I think that the English will need to play at their best to beat the Croatians, no room for complacency in the team, so that means keeping that donkey, Heskey out of the team.
