Today in work has been busy, in fact very busy, but that’s not the issue, my problem is with certain people that cant handle the pressure of a busy retail environment and take their frustrations out on other staff members, one of the offenders is head section supervisor, who was demanding the impossible, they cant have what I don’t have to give, simple as that. I had to bite my lip several times today, and I am not the only one, one of the new girls, was feeling really annoyed, to put it politely, after a while you become hardened to it, but its not really needed, if they asked, rather than demanded, they may get a better response from me, and other staff members, don’t they understand the principle of ‘a happy employee, works harder’. Other than that, when the worst offenders are negative all day, that negativity spreads, when I arrive in the morning, I am reasonably happy and in a good mood, come 4pm, I cant wait to get out of there, as I feel so frustrated and depressed at the attitude of certain key staff members, its no wonder that people don’t want to stay there for long. It’s got to the point now, where when I wake up, I feel like I cant face another day at work, and feel like calling in sick, but I don’t, mainly because of my stubborn streak, and not letting them get the better of me. Although if I answer back, usually correctly they don’t like it, and then try to make you look even more inferior, although today I got the supervisor a cracker, when she said “we don’t have any mugs” to which I replied “what’s this, scotch mist?” as I pulled out a tray full of mugs from the rack, she had no answer to that one. They never check the racks before shouting at us in the dish wash room for not having any cups and mugs out, maybe if the management looked before shouting they wouldn’t be made to look stupid by me, oh but they are too busy taking hour long breaks 3 times per day, nearly every time I look over, I see the catering manager and head supervisor sat down drinking coffee, although they claim to be working! I hate management!!! When I started this job I thought that everyone worked well together, and there was no ‘us’ and ‘them’ attitude, but the longer I stay there, I see that it is very much ‘us’ and ‘them’ although its more like ‘us’ and ‘them, and their arse-kissers’ which is something I will never be, or remotely want to be, I hate arse kissers with a vengeance!!!
While we are on the subject of work, because I am considered ‘part time’ as I only work 30 hours per week, although I have worked 37.5 hours this week, I don’t need a break, and it’s OK with the union apparently. The ‘full time’ staff can have two 20-minute breaks, plus a 1-hour lunch break, which means that they only work 1 hour 5 minutes more than the part time staff, given that the part time staff only get 30 minutes for lunch, us part time staff work as hard, if not harder than the full time staff, so we should be allowed a 10 minute break in the afternoon when its quiet. Again it goes back to the good will between employee and employer, which isn’t there at Derrys, I used to arrive in work and start working about 10 – 15 minutes before my start time, if they are going to stop us having breaks, I will sit outside and wait until my start time before commencing work, which is only fair.
In Formula One, Ferrari have been throwing their weight around again, over money, and that they (the teams) should get a larger share of the profits, and threaten to create a breakaway series, with manufacturers, Fiat (Ferrari), Mercedes, BMW and Renault. I hope that Bernie calls their bluff and they can start their own series, but I am not convinced that the other manufacturers will really want that, as the new series will not be able to carry the ‘Formula 1’ name as its is owned by Bernie and several banks, and when you take the name out of it, it becomes nothing, as it wont have the same prestige and history that Formula 1 has. Also only Fiat, in the guise of Ferrari and Renault have their own team, the other two only supply engines to teams, although taking the big hitters in the engine supplier market out of the equation could be interesting, as it would make the racing closer, as there wouldn’t be so much domination by one team.
