…It is now! Kimi Raikkonen’s slim chances of becoming Formula One world champion has now completely evaporated as Fernando grabbed the final six points he needed to win the championship, and became Formula One’s youngest ever world champion. I have to say that Fernando deserves it, he has driven fast when he needed to; and played it sensible to consolidate the lead he has had in the championship since the second race of the season, he has certainly come of age this season! I have to say that it would have been a different story if the McLaren package was more reliable, Kimi Raikkonen probably would have been leading the world championship, but that’s the breaks, sometimes it works for you, sometimes it doesn’t, but Kimi certainly had the lion’s share of the bad luck. At least there is a positive side to today, with McLaren grabbing their first 1-2 finish for some time, although it was Raikkonen’s team mate Juan Pablo Montoya that lead the team home, although if something were to happen to Alonso in the race, that position would have surely swapped around, but with the Renaults bulletproof reliability the race for the lead was all over but for the shouting as both McLarens dropped two seconds off the pace after the second pitstop to preserve the engine for the next race in Suzuka. It wasn’t a great day for the Brits with Jenson Button only managing a lowly 7th place, lacking straight line speed as BAR had gambled on a high downforce wet setup as rain was expected; but never materialised, but at least its another two points to the Britons tally. David Couthard’s race ended almost as soon as it began when he tangled with Williams driver Antonio Pizzonia, who in turn took out his team mate Mark Webber in his resulting spin. A day to forget for the British contingent, but after five years of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari domination, Formula One finally has a new world champion, and we are guaranteed a new constructors champions this year, whether it will be McLaren or Renault, that story is still to be told! Let’s hope that we will have a cracking end to this season, and hopefully no team orders. I would say that McLaren have the momentum at the moment, winning five out of the last six races, and have the best car on the grid by far, but there is still that niggling reliability issue!
