Today while sat outside work with a few work colleagues, we hear some arse shouting “I’m not afraid of you, I’ll take you all on, I’ll take on the whole village” – which is amusing in itself, calling Plymouth a village! Of course this amused us immensely, he eventually wandered towards us, and started to speak to one of the Chef’s, Gary, who obviously couldn’t give a fuck either way as he went on about the people around town having a problem with ‘Welsh asylum seekers’ and how he didn’t like the piss taken out of him. I sat there and kept my mouth shut, don’t know how, I was gagging to say something, luckily this arse didn’t try to talk to me, he just looked my way, then wandered off, probably something to do with the stupid smirk on my face, or maybe I am just scary looking. If you are going to act like a twat then you will be treated as one, simple as that, way too many weirdo’s about!
Onto the serious business, England have finally wrestled the Ashes away from the Aussies after 18 years. Andrew ‘Freddy’ Flintoff was the hero of the first innings, taking 5 wickets for 78 runs, and taking the important wicket of Matthew Hayden. And undoubtedly hero of the final day was Kevin Pietersen who hit 158 runs off 187 deliveries to steer England towards a historic Ashes win, after England had a mini collapse in the top order batting, leaving fans fearing the worst! Ashley Giles was a close second in the hero stakes, making 59 runs off 97 deliveries. But the surprise is the humility of Australia; they accepted defeat gracefully and said the better team won. It’s nice to see such sportsmanship in the game. Of course the Aussies have nothing to be ashamed of, they battled hard through all five tests, making it such a memorable series and brought cricket to the forefront of British sport once again, it certainly ignited my interest in cricket, just a shame that it’s all going to be on SKY TV for the next 4 years, the ECC have messed up big time with this, going for the money, not what’s best for the sport, maybe the government will step in and make it one of those grade ‘A’ sports that has to be available on terrestrial TV, I for one hope this will be the case. Anyway, England have finally beaten their arch nemesis, I wonder if we can recreate this form in 18 months time when we defend the Ashes down under, that would be the ultimate to beat them on their own turf. But of course, Australia will be a different side then as many of the ‘old guard’ are set to retire from International cricket over the next two years. I wonder if Australia can recreate such a legendary side like the one of the last 10 years, guess only time will tell, but somehow I seriously doubt they will be able to match it!
