Liverpool’s recent inability to score goals has finally come to haunt them in the Champions League losing 0 – 2 to Benfica at Anfield, which left Liverpool 3 – 0 down over the two legs. It wasn’t for the lack of trying, Liverpool had most of the possession during the first half and the build up play was excellent, but the finish just wasn’t there, Liverpool could have been 4 – 0 up at half time if they took their chances. Crouch hit the same post twice during the game, but Benifca managed to score totally against the run of play which deflated the Merseyside team, but to their credit they battled away, but it wasn’t going to happen, it simply wasn’t Liverpool’s night. But the Anfield crowd were brilliant, supporting their team right to the very end singing the Liverpool anthem “you’ll never walk alone” – Liverpool supporters are probably the best in the world. At least we can take solace in the fact that Chelsea won’t be lifting the cup this year as they got knocked out by favourites Barcelona, which is just what they deserved after manager Jose Mourinho accused referee for the first leg of the tie of cheating, lying about the Barca manager going into the refs room to meet with Anders Frisk, which was proved to be totally untrue. The end result was that Frisk decided to quit football because of fears for his family after death threats, and what did UEFA dish out, a £8,900 fine and two-match touchline ban, what a fucking joke; anyway, its sweet justice that his team were dumped out of the Champions League. Arsenal are the only UK team to go through to the quarter finals holding Real Madrid to a scoreless draw, defending their 1 – 0 lead from Highbury, at least we have one representative in Europe this season, albeit not the team I wanted to progress, but I think it was only a matter of time before it happened as Liverpool’s strike force simply haven’t been scoring goals recently.
On a personal note, things are looking a little brighter; I am going out for a drink with Helen tomorrow. I had a good chat with her tonight, she was feeling really down about herself again, I tried my best to pick her up off the floor, hopefully it worked, at least partially, it’s hard to explain without telling the whole story, but I can’t publish that sort of information on the internet, anyway, we’ll see what happens tomorrow, not that I have any preconceptions, I am going to take it one step at a time, I don’t want to push things!
