Do I have a drinking problem?

That’s the question I have to ask myself; when I used to work in the Phoenix I never used to drink while on duty at the sound desk, but at Voodoo I start drinking almost as soon as I arrive, which isn’t a good thing. It doesn’t stop me doing my job properly as sound engineering comes naturally to me, but ultimately it negates the point of working at all as I spend most of the money earnt on beer. I know I am not an alcoholic as I see that there’s a potential problem, but can I resist the temptation when others around me are drinking? That’s the problem I see is the social aspect, someone will buy me a drink, then I feel obliged to return the favour and buy myself another drink at the same time. We are not talking a couple of beers over the night, I am talking more like seven or eight pints which is a problem. I really need to make an effort to not drink while working at Voodoo, ultimately it must effect my performance as an engineer, although everyone still says it sounds good! Alcohol makes you more relaxed about the job and things that I would normally pick up and fix get left in the mix because my ears are not quite as tuned to the sound of the PA as they would be if I was sober. I love the job, but if I can’t control my drinking while at Voodoo I may have no option but to give up on an engineering career and get another 9 – 5 job. I didn’t have the temptation to drink while I was working at Derrys nor do I have a temptation to drink at home, so it’s got to be the social aspect and the fact the I work in a bar environment, one thing is for certain I need to cut out the drinking, let’s face it, beer isn’t the most tasty drink in the world and it ends up dehydrating the body, which can never be good in a hot environment like Voodoo; something has got to give one way or another!

Plymouth Argyle have slumped to 9th in the league after yesterday’s disappointing 1 – 1 draw with bottom of the league Southend. Plymouth took the lead early in the game courtesy of out of favour Bojan Djordjic, but that lead was cancelled out 15 minutes after the half time interval by a Mark Gower volley from 10 yards out. Plymouth had the better of the game, but ultimately it the final score that counts, and that’s Plymouth’s failing at the moment, they simply can’t convert pressure into goals, at least winning goals. In reality Plymouth are only three wins away from league leaders Cardiff who lost their game against QPR at Ninian Park, but I can’t see that happening. Plymouth have been consistent this season, but consistently drawing games doesn’t get a promotion/play-off place. Next Saturday is a big one, Leeds at Home Park, judging by form, Plymouth should win this game against struggler’s Leeds United, but Argyle’s lack of potency in front of goal makes me question that; but I sincerely hope I am wrong on that, and we do beat the Yorkshire team!
