Plymouth Argyle beat promotion chasing Preston North End 2 – 0 at Home Park on Saturday as Preston’s their slump in form continued. Plymouth looked much the better team during the game, despite Preston having more of the possession, but Argyle still had to wait until the 77th minute when Graham Alexander handled in the area. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake made no mistake from the spot powering the ball past Preston keeper Wayne Henderson. Barry Hayles doubled the lead 8 minute later with a low drive from close range. So with one game to go, Argyle sit in 12th, two points ahead of Crystal Palace and level on points with early season leaders Cardiff City. The best Argyle can achieve this season is 11th, which would be great, it’s an improvement of two places on last year. But for that to happen Argyle need to win their away tie with Hull next Saturday, a draw would mean that Argyle drops to 13th should Crystal Palace win their game away at Colchester. We need Cardiff to lose or draw their away tie at Ipswich to go 11th as it’s unlikely we can overhaul Cardiff’s goal difference over us, Argyle would need to win 8 – 0 assuming that Cardiff won 1 – 0. I reckon that of Palace, Argyle and Cardiff, I reckon Plymouth has the easiest tie!
Liverpool weren’t so fortunate against Portsmouth at Fratton Park going down 2 – 1 to the home team. Rafael Benitez elected to rest Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, Peter Crouch, Pepe Reina and Javier Mascherano with an eye on their Champions League return match on Tuesday against Chelsea. Portsmouth scored twice in five minutes firstly Benjani Mwaruwari took advantage of a Jerzy Dudek’s goalkeeping error, then Niko Kranjcar controlled the ball nicely to power home from 12 yards out. Sami Hyypia narrowed the deficit to one goal with a header from a Robbie Fowler corner. But Liverpool never really looked in the game with so many big names being rested. Assuming that Arsenal beat Fulham at The Emirates, Liverpool will only be one point ahead of Arsenal at the end of the day with two matches left to play, 3rd is still up for grabs at the moment!
I decided to step off the wagon for one night last night, I worked until 11:30pm, It was an acoustic night, so it was pretty easy, the changeovers were quick. I went straight over to Club Juice above Goodies to see Redemption Unnamed play which was surprisingly good, I was worried about them not going down so well on a goth night as they are a metal band. It was bizarre though, I asked for a pint of John Smiths and got a can and pint glass, but it was only £2, so could live with it. I had 3 drinks there, then back over to Voodoo and have one more, which took me ages to drink, so a total of four drinks and I had enough, I’ve turned into a lightweight. I don’t see a problem with going out once a week to have a few drinks as long as its controlled, but no-more drinking on weekdays and definitely not on a work night!
