Plymouth Argyle have breezed past Doncaster to make it into the third round of the Carling Cup and could face Premiership opposition in the next round, we’ll see what they draw throws up. Plymouth definitely had the better of the game claiming a whopping 82% possession of the ball. And didn’t take too long to get on the score sheet with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scoring with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area in the 15th minute. Although Plymouth had the lions share of the possession, the Pilgrims had to wait until the 89th minute to make the game safe from Luke Summerfield’s curling shot from 20 yards out, although Doncaster never looked like scoring. But in all fairness Doncaster did well to restrict Argyle to a 2 – 0 win, so all credit to them for that, Argyle will be disappointed they didn’t win by more, but whether it’s 1 – 0 or 10 – 0, a win is a win, so I’m not complaining, just a shame it’s not in the league; Argyle’s league form is looking patchy right now!
Liverpool made it through to the group stages of the champions league easing their way past Toulouse at Anfield, putting four goals past the French team. Peter Crouch opened the scoring getting on the end of a Dirk Kuyt cross from 6 yards out in the 19th minute. Peter Crouch missed another couple of great headed opportunities to extend the lead, but Sami Hyypia made no mistake getting his head to Yossi Benayoun cross to put the home team two goals to the good in the 48th minute. Dirk Kuyt put the game completely out of reach of the French side in the dying moments with two goals in a five minute period of play. Liverpool walked away from the two leg tie 5 – 0 up on aggregate, it could have been more if the Liverpool players took all their opportunities on goal, but it seems that Liverpool are in good form going into the group stages, it’ll be interesting to see who we get drawn against in the group stages, all is going to plan thusfar; and long may it continue is what I say!
