Seeking ‘thinspiration’

We all hear and read about how more and more people are becoming obese, but what we don’t hear about very often these days is the opposite end of the scale; anorexia and bulimia. I was reading this article on the BBC News website and was quite shocked how these so called responsible social networking sites allow groups that encourage younger girls to lose weight, some girls are as thin as 5st in weight, which I find disturbing. I’m not going to name the groups as I don’t want other people to be encouraged to diet until they become dangerously thin. It’s probably less dangerous for women to be overweight than underweight, 5 stone is a silly weight to be unless you happen to be 10 years old. I don’t believe that a woman should be so thin that you can see their bones under the skin. All this is because they have a psychological disorder thinking they are fat despite being nothing of the sort, these girls need help with their illness, not encouragement to be even thinner. I don’t find that attractive, I like a woman to look like a woman, curves n’all. Anyway, these sites say its against their rules to post “harmful content” but allow these groups to exist on their systems unchecked. Encouraging these kind of actions could definitely be considered harmful content, giving hints and tips on how to lose unhealthy amounts of weight. The media in general doesn’t help, propagating the thin is beautiful ideals, my preference for women has been well documented on here, and thin women really aren’t what I find attractive, there’s slim and then there is thin; I wonder how many girls die each year because of the “advice” that these groups give out? And these sites really don’t seem to care!
