You wouldn’t think…

That DJ’ing an under 18s foreign student night would be so stressful, but I can confirm from last night that it is; especially when you haven’t had time to prepare for the night. I was basically called in 10 minutes before doors were meant to open and had to wing it for most of the night as I was using someone else’s CD’s and I know bugger all about popular chart music these days. It doesn’t help when the kids are requesting songs that I have never heard of, let alone know if it’s in one of the multiple CD cases available to me. And most of the CD’s were labelled incorrectly so the track number didn’t correspond to the tracks on the CD’s, but that worked into my advantage a couple of times as the song that I accidentally played went down stupidly well. Some of the tracks I didn’t even know what the name of the song was, but the foreign students certainly knew it which is the main thing. So I think I managed to blag my way through the night somehow. I was well and truly out of my depth last night really, it’s hard to DJ music that I never heard before, let alone know if it’s in the collection available to me. But at the end of the night it was a welcome 40 quid addition to my bank balance, although the supervisor on the night didn’t want to authorise paying me the going rate of 40 quid which the DJ that couldn’t make it would have gotten paid and offered me six free drinks as an alternative. I really didn’t want to drink, I just wanted to get the night over and done with as I was shattered after spending 4 hours on a train on a day trip to Barnstaple! But that didn’t stop me from having a few drinks after I finished, although I was struggling, only drank three pints in 4 hours, that’s not like me at all, but considering that I didn’t even want to go into work at all as Phil was covering open mic night, which never actually got started, Voodoo was pretty much empty all night! I hope tonight is going to be busier as it’s the first night of Alternation as a free entry event and I will be DJ’ing alone as Steve has sprained his ankle and can’t make it it as he needs to rest his ankle, but that’s also good as I get the 50 quid to myself, so my financial worries for this month as starting to ease. Just for a change things are working in my favour instead of against me!

Now it’s one of those times when I have to eat my words, yesterday morning I wrote “I question Ian Bell and Alistair Cook’s inclusion in the team, in my opinion, both players aren’t really suited to the one day international game” – Now, just to prove me wrong, Alistair Cook and Ian Bell both made maiden ODI centuries helping England to 288 – 2 in their 50 overs. Cook knocked up 102 before being bowled by Singh and Ian Bell finished the innings 126 not out off 118 balls, so it’s a case of eating humble pie for me, but I am happy to take back what I have said, but the question is can they take that form into the next game. Kevin Pietersen added 33 runs in 25 balls to post a robust total for India to chase. The Indians were found somewhat lacking with only Dravid and Karthik making any impact scoring 46 and 44 respectively and slumped to 184 all out with Monty Panesar claiming the final wicket of Singh on the very last ball of the innings. Andrew Flintoff bowled well on his return to international action bowling seven overs for 12 runs and claimed the wicket of Dhoni. We don’t know how his batting form was as he didn’t get a chance to bat because of Cook and Bell’s stunning performance with the bat. So England made a good start to the one day series, has Flintoff’s return really buoyed the England lads, there seems to be much more sharpness and resoluteness in the England camp, more of the same on Friday please!
