No bragging rights!

I guess neither myself or my friend Stuart can really brag about my team beating his team or vice-versa. His team being Manchester City and my team being Liverpool. Stuart was giving it all that saying that Manchester City were going to beat Liverpool and the result, a scoreless draw. The first 25 minutes was pretty unexciting without a single shot on target for either team, then suddenly the game exploded into life, Harry Kewell stinging shot needing to be gathered up by City keeper Joe Hart at the second attempt. Fabio Aurelio’s long range effort was tipped over the crossbar as the first half came to a close. Liverpool stepped it up another gear in the second half peppering shots at the City goal but the City defence stood tall and repelled all the Merseyside teams attacks. Between Richard Dunne and Joe Hart the path to the back of the Manchester City goal seemed blocked at every turn. Dirk Kuyt came close to putting the visitors ahead in the 87th minute but it was Dunne and Hart that thwarted his close range headed effort. If Liverpool took their chances they should have won the game, but they didn’t and City were well worth the draw as they defended resolutely closing down the Liverpool attack and getting in vital blocks to deny the Scousers. Liverpool now find themselves 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal going into the New Year and four points behind third placed Chelsea, Man City remain one point behind Liverpool in 5th place. Next game for Liverpool should be a definite 3-pointer, Wigan at Anfield, but with Liverpool’s indifferent form, but that may be a bit presumptuous!

I’ve been thinking about the New Years honours list or the Queen’s Birthday honours list. Most of the honours are so rediculously outdated its unbelievable, OBE, MBE and CBE, the ‘BE’ stands for British Empire. In the 21st century the British Empire doesn’t really exist anymore. It just proves to me that Britain is still living off past glories, the world is unrecognisable from what it was 100 years ago and these awards need to reflect the modern world. Another thing, why do sportsman get awards for doing what is expected of them? they are being paid well to play to the best of their abilities. Same goes for pop or movie stars, they are getting honours for being popular, they maybe good actors/singers, but does that make them worthy of receiving an honour? I’m good at my job but I am unlikely to get recognition from the Queen. People that do deserve it are people that do lots of work for charity or help out the disadvantaged or even healthcare workers that perform medical miracles on a daily basis. Can you guess that I’m fed up with the way this country works?
