But I will be supporting Manchester United in the Champions League final as I can’t bring myself to support Chelsea (at least not since Abramovich took control). Liverpool were knocked out of the competition going down 3 – 2 (4 – 3 on aggregate) after extra time. Ultimately as I feared, Riise’s own goal at Anfield came into play but not for the reason I thought. Rafa Benitez must have wished he’d kept his mouth shut about Didier Drogba being a ‘diver’. The Ivory Coast international netted two for Chelsea, scoring the first and deciding goal to book Chelsea’s place in Moscow. The score was 1 – 1 at full time after Fernando Torres does what he does best, find the back of the net mid way through the second half. Sami Hyypia brought down Michael Ballack in the 98th minute and Frank Lampart calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right sending Reina the wrong way to make it 2 – 1. Then seven minute later Liverpool found themselves two goals behind, Drogba sweeping Anelka’s slick pass into the back of the net. Ryan Babel unleashed a shot out of nowhere from 35 yards out that Petr Cech had no chance of stopping. Which set up a frantic final few minutes as Liverpool poured forward looking for their third goal to take them through. But sadly for me and all Liverpool fans Chelsea stood firm and resisted resolutely to send them through to the final. I can’t really blame John Arne Riise for the own goal but you have to think that we would be on our way to Moscow if he just left the ball, but I guess there is always next year as we are all but assured 4th place which gets us into Europe next season!
