Myself and Stephen set out on our trip across France, Belgium and Germany to Poland where he lives. We left at 7pm instead of 9pm so arrived at Dover to catch the 2am ferry instead of 4am via being fleeced by Burger King at Welcome Break. We boarded the ferry on time and watched on from the warmth of the cabin as the ferry set to sea. After grabbing something warm to drink we ventured out onto the deck; Which was cold but offered up some spectacularly views of the French coastline all lit up! Upon arriving in Dunkerque things didn’t start well as Stephen took the wrong turn and ended up driving towards Calais instead of heading towards the Belgian border. So had to make a quickly turn around to start heading in the right direction. Things to take away from Belgium, the roads were very potholed, it rained a lot but they do make wonderful coffee. Then it was onto Germany for our first refuel on the continent. Then proceeded to get ourselves completely lost as we misunderstood Google Maps instructions on how to get to Poland. We managed to lose about 45 minutes driving the wrong way down the autobahn before realising our mistake. Three hours later we were still in Germany, it’s a deceptively big country to traverse. So we decided to try that great German delicacy Schnitzel and it was very nice despite having a slight problem with the language barrier. Then we hit the road again but by this time tiredness was kicking in big time as we had been on the road for some 15 hours so we had to pull over for some air, some very strong coffee and some coca cola to try to keep us awake. We had to stop again for a further break as I could barely keep my eyes open and Stephen was losing concentrating big time. We eventually crossed the Polish border at about 6:30pm, some 23 hours after we set off. Yet another refuelling stop and we started the 500km drive to Krakow. Which was far from uneventful as we required another fuel stop because the fuel gauge decided it was going to show that the tank was empty constantly so we had no idea of how much fuel was left. And of course we both needed another wake up stop to grab some coffee and sweeties. We eventually arrived in Krakow at about 11:00ish local time, some 28 hours after we set off. We set up stuff like wi-fi and the TV system and the time is now nearly 3am and we are both shattered although I cant sleep hence why I am writing this now. So if you will excuse me I am off to try to get some sleep; Nighty Night!
