Day 2: The Market Square

Sunday was a more relaxing day all round. I woke about 1pm local time and we went down to the market square; which is absolutely huge. I was amazed at how much was going on, horse and carriage rides, big screen TV’s showing sport, loads of market stalls and a huge outdoor stage, sound system and lighting rig. I went to the cash point / ATM to get some money out and although it was in English it’s hard to know how much I needed, apparently 100 zlotys is equivalent to around 25 pounds. First thing we did was find somewhere to eat, we grabbed a couple of vouchers for a free beer at a local restaurant from a guy dressed as giant beer in the square. The beers actually cost 10 zlotys which works out to about about £2.50, but it was buy one get one free, so we ended up with four beers for 2.50, which is incredible when you think of UK prices. I had a huge schnitzel and when I say huge I mean it, the thing was bigger than the plater than it came on complimented with chips. I struggled to eat it all but I did and it was very nice and only cost 19 zlotys which is less than five pounds. What I did like was the fact they have live acoustic music in the restaurant, there was a three piece band playing traditional Polish music with double bass, accordion and violin and it sounded amazing, sounded much bigger than you’d think, that room must have had amazing acoustics. I really can’t get out of my sound engineering head even when I am on holiday. When we came out it had started to rain which I found ironic as Stephen was always telling me how it’s always nice weather in Krakow. We jumped on a tram to Tesco and grabbed a few bits and pieces as there was no food in the apartment before making our way back to the apartment. Later in the evening I went out for a couple of beers and I met one of Stephen’s friends Nacho from Spain which was cool, he seemed like a nice guy. We only stayed out for a couple of beers and we took our time drinking them which was rather nice compared to what I am used to. In the UK we’d all stay out until we either ran out of money or fell over, I prefer the sort of life here, it’s just a social drinking culture and not the culture of drinking until we drop! So overall impressions of Krakow is that it’s a very nice city, it’s a nice break away from everything, it’s so different from the UK, it’s almost like a carnival atmosphere here in the town square, there’s always so much going on. My insomnia is still apparent even here in Poland, couldn’t get to sleep until 3am again although I did talk to Erin for a while and *maybe* there might be a chance of ultimately being together. But I am not going talk about that right now, I’ll see what happened in the future, I’m still moving ahead with my plans to meet Anita and follow that through!
