I think that this past week has proved that Paul Sturrock doesn’t have what it takes to cut it at Championship level. First Tuesday’s 2 – 0 defeat at cash strapped bargain basement club Luton Town in the first round of the Carling Cup. And why he keeps on playing Steven MacLean in a strikers role baffles me as he clearly isn’t an out and out striker, he would be much better as centre midfield. Then on Saturday afternoon; another 2 – 0 defeat, albeit to a much better side in the form of Reading at the Madejski Stadium. I am now seriously worried that we may well be joining Leicester in League One next season. Three games in, two losses and one draw. Last season our home form was poor, often dropping two points when we should have had all three. Last season’s saviour was our away form claiming more points on the road than at home. Things aren’t looking so rosy this season thusfar. Plymouth are currently in 18th with two league games played and a -2 goal difference. The next match is this Saturday against Swansea at Home Park, Sturrock’s men need to win this game, it’s definitely a winnable game but can the Argyle XI get it together enough to win?
Liverpool did better in the opening weekend of the Premiership season beating Sunderland 1 – 0 at the Stadium of Light. But the Liverpool strikers had to work hard for the three points as Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon thwarted attempts by Yossi Benayoun, Robbie Keane and Anfield golden boy Fernando Torres during the 90 minutes. But it was Torres that had the final laugh with superb 25 yard drive to finally defeat Gordon to claim all three points. Sunderland deserved a point from the tie really but it’s not based on how well a team has played over 90 minutes but the scoreline at the end of the 90 that counts. Despite the win Liverpool are still only 9th in the league after one game but that’s one place ahead of Manchester United who could only manage a 1 – 1 draw with Newcastle at Old Trafford!
