Weekend Sport!

Both my football (that’s European football… I haven’t been americanised yet!) interests won their games on Saturday afternoon. Craig Noone’s first professional goal is all that separated the teams at the Ricoh Arena. Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood kept The Sky Blues in the game with excellent saves to deny Craig Cathcart and Luke Summerfield before finally conceding in the 87th minute. Noone broke free of his marker to smash the ball home to register his first professional goal after coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute. Plymouth move upto 9th in the league, still 3 points off a play-off spot. Argyle are still very much in the hunt for a play-off place, it makes me wonder what position we would have been in if it wasn’t for the disastrous start to the season. Plymouth host 6th place Cardiff City at Home Park on Saturday but will need to beat the Welsh side by 3 clear goals to move ahead of them in the league.

Liverpool remain second in the Premiership after beating Bolton 0 – 2 at the Reebok Stadium as Chelsea extend their goal difference advantage. Dirk Kuyt headed Fabio Aurelio’s cross home in the 28th minute to give the visitors the lead. Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard missed easy chances before Gerrard made the result secure in the 72nd minute converting Fernando Torres cross. Bolton should have pulled one back but Gary Cahill’s goal was disallowed for a foul. Liverpool outplayed The Trotters for much of the game but the home team mounted some excellent counter attacks with Ricardo Gardner missing two good chances. A comfortable win but the Reds need to win by a bigger margin to overhaul Chelsea’s goal difference advantage.
