I have forgotten all about the football fixtures over last weekend, and the news isn’t good from both my football interests. Plymouth Argyle didn’t have such good fortune when they visited the city of Sheffield for a second time in five days. Sheffield United beat Argyle 2 – 0 at Bramall Lane with two second half goals. James Beattie scored both United goals, the first from the penalty spot after being brought down by the converging Krisztian Timar and Chris Barker in the 48th minute. Beattie made it 2 – 0 in the 57th minute with a free kick from outside the 18 yard box. Plymouth have dropped to 12th place now 5 points off a play-off place. Argyle are struggling to string results together, it seems to be win one, lose one at the moment.
Liverpool also conceded their advantage over Chelsea after losing 2 – 1 to Spurs despite initially taking the lead. Dirk Kuyt picked up on a neat pass from former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane to fire a rocket into the top corner of the Spurs net in the 3rd minute. The Reds dominated most of the play hitting the Spurs woodwork twice until Jamie Carragher mistimed his headed clearance directing the ball into the back of his own net to make it 1 – 1. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored the winner in the dying moments of the game finding the back of the net after Darren Bent’s quick reactions to lay the ball off at Pavlyuchenko’s feet. So Liverpool have undone their good work beating Chelsea last weekend to slip behind the London based team on goal difference. It’s definitely a game that Liverpool should have won to maintain their league advantage but didn’t close the deal being denied by the woodwork and some good goalkeeping from Gomes.
