Allow it to be thrown at George W Bush, but you best be quick as Bush’s tenure at the White House is about to expire (and not before time, in my opinion). Further to my entry yesterday about Sock and Awe, today I have read that the shoe company that make the shoes that were thrown at Bush having tens of thousands of extra orders. The shoes named “Model 271” has been renamed “Bush Shoe” and have been ordered by thousands of Americans and Iraqis. The Turkish company, Baydan Shoes, who make the shoes have said that they have employed 100 extra people to cope with demand. Although there is some dispute about where the shoes were made, Syrians also claim they were made in Syria, but the Iraqi journalists brother claims that the shoes were made in Iraq, and bought in Baghdad. Saying that they Turkish and Syrian companies were just cashing in on his brothers recent fame. I guess that we’ll never know for sure, either way it looks like George Bush inadvertently did something good for the economy!

This is one for the [Star] Trekkies out there, I would definitely put myself in that group as would Erin, although not to the extreme, I have never worn a Starfleet uniform or dressed as a Klingon. Majel Barrett passed away last Thursday after a battle with leukaemia at the age of 76. For those of you that aren’t in the elite Trekkie group let me enlighten you. Gene Roddenberry is the visionary that created the Star Trek universe which many argue is what spawned the sci-fi genre as we know it and introduced so many ideas that have become integral to daily life. Majel was cast in the original Star Trek series as Nurse Chapel and later married Gene Roddenberry. Barrett was a well known character in the Star Trek series, most notably known as the voice of the computer in every TNG, DS9, STV and Enterprise as well as all the movies. Majel recently finished voicing for the forthcoming Star Trek XI. Gene died all the way back in 1991 but Barrett has continued to keep Gene’s vision alive during the past 18 years attending many Star Trek conferences, it was the fans love for Gene’s work that kept her going for so long. I hope that the Star Trek franchise doesn’t die out now that Majel has passed on. As long as the fans have Star Trek running through their blood then it will never die. It’s a sad day for all true sci-fi fans.

The World may have a new Pope but nothing has changed! Pope Benedict XVI has said “mankind needed to be saved from a destructive blurring of gender” continuing on to say “saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment“. Understandably gay rights activists are very annoyed (to put it politely), even Christian groups have spoken out against the Pope’s latest (non PC) statements. The Catholic church in an outdated and idiotic faith that really has no place in modern society with attitudes like that. And in many ways the Pope’s comments should be illegal and he should be tried for inciting hatred. Man does not need to be saved from itself, at least not in that respect. What harm are gays and lesbians doing to the world? none, just leave them in peace to get on with their lives in happiness! But that won’t happen with the holier than thou Catholic church!

Formula One; Bernie Ecclestone has been at it again, trying to push the idea of a medals based system in F1. Drivers would be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Anyone see the obvious problem with that proposal? Basically three or four teams would win every medal as it’s rare for a manufacturer other than Ferrari, McLaren, BMW or Renault to finish on the podium. Which will discourage the midfield and lower ranked teams from competing. The team bosses are calling for Ecclestone to step down and for a greater share of the sports revenue to go to the teams competing in the sport. Bernie has said “This is Formula One, the pinnacle of world motorsport, and only the best driver should win the title” – since when has that actually been true? If the best driver is in an uncompetitive car then he can’t win because the machinery is inferior to the leading teams machinery. Ecclestone doesn’t half talk some bullshit, time to retire Bernie, your time is nigh, stop delaying the inevitable…

It’s Christmas time which means it’s UK’s Christmas #1 time and guess what? It’s another pathetic X-Factor song that has gotten to Number 1. I haven’t heard the song or any of the competitors in this years X-Factor due to not having a TV and being in the US the past two months. This years #1 is a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke. There was a big campaign on Facebook for everyone to buy the superior Jeff Buckley version which made it to #2 and even more amazingly the original Cohen version made it to #36. Will someone please shoot Simon Cowell and stop the constant stream of drivel that comes from his record company?
