Liverpool have an uphill battled against Chelsea in the return leg at Stamford Bridge after being beaten 1 – 3 at Anfield in their Champions League quarter final fixture. Fernando Torres fired Liverpool into the lead in the 6th minute and looked on course to record another win against the Londoners. But it wasn’t to be as the visitors took control of the game with an attacking exhibition with Serbian Branislav Ivanovic beating three Liverpool defenders to the ball to head past Pepe Reina six minutes before half time. The Serb scored a similar goal seven minutes after the interval to put Chelsea into the lead. Didier Drogba put the game out of reach in the 67th minute from eight yards out. Liverpool had their chances to score several more goals as did Chelsea but the Reds didn’t take the opportunities presented to them. It was Liverpool’s poor defending of set-pieces that undid the Merseysiders allowing Ivanovic to score with two almost identical aerial strikes. This leaves Benitez’ team needed to score three times without reply in the second leg at Stamford Bridge to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League. As I said, it’ll be an uphill battle to progress into the next round, but Liverpool have a record to massive comebacks to win ties in the past, let’s hope it’ll be the case in two weeks time.
