It’s been four years since the last one, Italy won it last beating France 5 – 3 on penalties after extra time. Yes it’s time for the World Cup again and it all kicked off yesterday with hosts South Africa giving a good account of themselves narrowly missing out on a winning start. Katlego Mphela hit the post in the dying moments meaning the hosts had to settle for a 1 – 1 draw with Mexico. France are a shadow of their former selves being held to a scoreless draw with Uruguay, I can’t see France making it to the final this year unless they drastically improve! But the big interest for me is England versus USA in about two hours time. I really wanted to go out to a bar to watch the game; probably the only England supporter in the whole of Kansas. I’m not even sure if there are any soccer fans here in Wichita. Today, 2004 European Championship winners Greece were beaten by South Korea 2 – 0, The Asian side really embarrassed Greece and should have won by a much bigger margin. While Argentina beat Nigeria 1 – 0, but having watched the game I would say that Argentina are not firing on all cylinders at this time but that said a win is a win, the three points is all the counts at this stage. It’s also the return of F1 to Canada this weekend, hopefully this track will have some good racing of old as Hermann Tilke hasn’t had a hand in the design of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Hopefully this race we won’t have all the controversy of Turkey with Red Bull’s antics blaming Mark Webber for Vettel’s impetuous move on the Australia which resulted in a certain 1 – 2 finish being lost with Vettel crashing out and Mark Webber limping home in third. And of course who is going to end up in the wall of champions, will it be Button, Hamilton, Alonso or Schumacher? It’s not named the wall of champions coming off the final turn for nothing!!!
