In the Football World Cup, England could only manage a 1 – 1 draw with the USA in their opening game. England started brightly, Steven Gerrard finding the back of the net from the centre of the penalty area within five minutes of the kick-off. Then the game seemed to have stalled as far as the English were concerned as the USA grew more confident as the first half progressed. In the 40th minute came the freak goal for the USA, Robert Green looked like he had Clint Dempsey’s shot under control but the ball somehow managed to bobble under Green’s body into the back of the net to gift the USA an equaliser. The Americans had the better of the game in the second half almost taking all three points but were denied by the woodwork, Green managing to get a finger to the ball deflecting the shot onto the post. Given all the hype going into this World Cup, I am distinctly unimpressed with the England performance; like the French; England will have to pull their socks up if they are to do well in this World Cup. I wouldn’t be surprised to see David James replace Green in-between the sticks for the next match against Algeria on the 18th June.
Lewis Hamilton claimed his first pole position of the season ahead of the Red Bull’s or Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. It was looking like another Red Bull front row until Hamilton pulled a 1:15.105, over two tenths faster than Webber and four tenths faster than team mate Jenson Button down in fifth. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso will line up alongside Sebastian Vettel in fourth, while Vitantonio Liuzzi pulled the shock of the session lining up alongside Jenson Button in sixth. Mercedes who were tipped to be strong in Montreal could only manage 10th and 13th for Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, it seems the all German team have fallen back in this race. Let’s see what happens tomorrow; I’m especially interested to see what happens between Vettel and Webber off the line; can Lewis Hamilton convert his pole position into back to back wins or will the Red Bull’s jump the McLaren at the start and go on to dominate the race again? Will the Mercedes duo be able to make their way through the field or will they get bogged down in midfield? I’m hoping for a good race as Montreal is traditional a circuit that produces good racing.
