James Brent has outlined his view for the future of Plymouth Argyle Football Club and it all seems very sensible and good. But I have some reservations about it as it still seems to me that it’s not about what he can do for the club but more what the club can do to increase his Akkeron Group’s portfolio and profits in the longer term. Brent himself admits that he knows very little about football and how things work in football ownership. Don’t get me wrong, Brent seems to have the correct idea; doing the right thing, paying the players and staff current and delinquent wages and building a stable platform to hopefully assure Football League survival but I would rather have someone that is a football person who will put the club first, not just part of a bigger puzzle.
Paul Buttivant seems like the better option in my opinion, he has gone on record as saying he wants to put football first and doesn’t require the city council to buy back the Home Park freehold and also would remove Peter Ridsdale from the club (which is always a bonus). Buttivant has recently resubmitted his bid for the club with a substantial deposit being made available at their lawyer’s office. But in reality, Brent is in pole position to buy the club, the big stumbling block is the council buying back the Argyle land, I don’t see how the council can reasonably vote to spend out millions on the freehold of Home Park when services and jobs are being cut left, right and centre.
Peter Reid has proved what a legend he is, yet again… he released this statement through the League Managers Association, thank you Peter for with sticking us through the toughest of times.
