Battle for European places in Premiership hots up!

The fight for positions 3rd through 7th is very tight in the Premiership over this weekend, three points cover five teams with four teams on 22 points while Manchester City are out on their own with 34 points at the top of the table, City having a five point advantage over local rivals, United in second place, given how well The Blue are playing, they’re favourites for the Premier League title.

Liverpool dealt a mighty blow to Chelsea’s hopes of winning the Premiership title beating The (other) Blues 1 – 2 at Stamford Bridge. Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 33rd minute finishing from close range from a sweet move involving Luis Suarez and Craig Bellamy. Liverpool were definitely the better side in the first half which was reflected in the 0 – 1 scoreline.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas brought Daniel Sturridge on for Mikel at half time and that change brought a goal ten minutes after the restart, Sturridge netting Florent Malouda’s shot-cum-cross from close range. Both teams had chances to win the game, Malouda missed a golden chance scuffing across the face of goal while Dirk Kuyt fired wide from close range.

As the game looked like it would end a point-a-piece, Glen Johnson found the back of the net for the Reds with a close range effort from Charlie Adam’s cross in the 87th minute. Three points returning to Anfield this evening keeping Liverpool in sixth place just outside the European places, level on 22 points with Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal in 4th, 5th and 7th respectively. I would say that a league title for Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal is out of reach, that battle is between the two Manchester clubs, it seems that money can buy you a title given how much City have spent over the last 12 months, like Roman Abramovich did when he bought Chelsea in 2003!
