Liverpool sail past Brighton into FA Cup sixth round!

Liverpool booked their place in the sixth round of the FA Cup by beating Brighton 6 – 1 at Anfield on Sunday and will face Stoke City on March 17th. It’s fair to say that Liverpool had more than a helping hand in achieving the scoreline of 6 – 1, the visiting side scored three own goals.

Martin Skrtel opened the scoring in the fifth minute heading Steven Gerrard’s inswinging corner goalbound only to be cancelled out by Kazenga LuaLua’s 25 yard free kick in the 17th minute. Despite the Liverpool pressure, the Championship side held their own with some last ditch defending until the 44th minute when Liam Bridcutt got in the way of a goal line clearance of Glen Johnson’s header, bundling the ball into his own net to give the Reds a 2 – 1 half time lead!

Andy Carroll made it 3 – 1 in the 57th minute from 12 feet out from Steward Downing’s pinpoint cross from the edge of the box. Liam Bridcutt scored a second own goal in the 71st minute, turning Gerrard’s pass back across goal into his own net, a day to forget for the Brighton #26. But own goal of the day goes to Lewis Dunk, who attempted a fancy clearance of Suarez’ cross but put the ball over his own goal-line instead in the 74th minute, the scoreline now reads 5 – 1 to the Reds.

Dirk Kuyt was chopped down by former Plymouth Argyle player Craig Noone and a penalty was duly awarded but Luis Suarez saw his spot kick saved by Brighton keeper, Peter Brezovan, the scoreline remained 5 – 1 for the time being. Kuyt was denied a goal by the post before Suarez got his goal in the 85th minute, heading in from three yards as Carroll headed the ball across the face of goal.

Liverpool could have scored 10 goals if it weren’t for some last ditch defending and the great penalty save from The Seagulls keeper. But at the same time, Brighton were poor, Brighton manager Gus Poyet called his teams defending comical, which just about says it all, Liverpool were well worth the win, but were fortunate to receive three gifts from the visiting side in this tie!
