Liverpool ease their way into the last four of the FA Cup!

Liverpool eased their way past Stoke City to secure a place in the FA Cup semi-final against either local rivals Everton or Sunderland. The stats would suggest that it was an easy win for the Reds and I can’t tell you otherwise as I didn’t see the game live, but given Liverpool’s penchant to make life difficult for themselves, I suspect Stoke made it difficult for the Merseysiders to progress!

Luis Suarez put the home side in the lead with a 20 yard shot after a neat 1 – 2 with Maxi Rodriguez in the 23rd minute. But that lead was shortlived as former Red, Peter Crouch headed an equaliser from a set piece in the 26th minute, then Pepe Reina got himself booked unnecessarily for dissent; arguing with the referee. I don’t understand why players insist on arguing with the referee’s decision, it’s not going to achieve anything and will often have a detrimental effect!

Stuart Downing scored a brilliant goal through the vision of captain Steven Gerrard, Downing passed to Gerrard… Gerrard stopped the ball dead on the 18 yard line for Downing to pick up and run at goal, unleashing a shot from 15 yards to put the Reds through to the semi-finals.

The last two games I have seen Liverpool play, admittedly only highlights, I think this is the best I have seen this season. Whatever Kenny Dalglish said after the Premiership game against Sunderland has done the trick. I really hope we see this level of play until the end of the season!

Moving down the M5 to Home Park, Argyle took a narrow 1 – 0 victory over promotion chasing Shrewsbury Town. Plymouth Argyle legend Paul Wotton won it for the Pilgrims with one of his trademark long range free kicks, a 30 yard strike which Shrewsbury keeper Chris Neal couldn’t hold onto in the 21st minute. Alex MacDonald almost doubled the lead for the Pilgrims in the 75th minute, but saw his 25 yard strike hit the post. Argyle did have a late scare with Marvin Morgan hitting the crossbar but Jake Cole kept a clean sheet in front of the home crowd!
