Plymouth Argyle were denied a valuable point in the final 10 minutes at the County Ground by League 2 leaders Swindon Town while Liverpool defeated Everton 2 – 1 at Wembley to book their place in the FA Cup final against either Chelsea or Tottenham, which will be decided tomorrow!
The Pilgrims still need four points to secure football league status for 2012/13 after Alan Connell’s 84th minute goal snatched a point away from a defiant Argyle squad. Plymouth never looked like winning the game, a point looked likely as the game progressed but it wasn’t to be as Swindon moved a step closer to becoming League 2 champions and gaining promotion to League 1.
Now Argyle need at least one win and a draw to secure league survival, it’s a little bit tougher but still likely, currently sitting seven points above the bottom two places, with fellow strugglers Northampton, Barnet, Macclesfield and Hereford also struggling to pick up regular points.
At Wembley, Andy Carroll secured the win for the Reds with a late goal for the second time in two games. In true Liverpool fashion, the Reds had to come from behind to book their place in the FA Cup final; Nikica Jelavic picking up on a loose ball in the 18 yard box to put Everton into the lead in the 24th minute of the game. The scoreline remained 0 – 1 until the 62nd minute when Luis Suarez scored from 10 yards capitalising on Sylvain Distin’s backpass which went directly to Suarez’ feet!
Both teams had chances to win it; but neither team could find the finish until Andy Carroll’s glancing header from Craig Bellamy’s free kick broke the deadlock, sending Liverpool into their second final appearance at Wembley. Liverpool are still on for the double, let’s hope that the Reds can secure another trophy as doing anything in the league is now almost out of the question.
