Speaking as a non-American living in America; I’m currently completing a GED so I have been learning about the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence, which leaves me confused by trade embargoes as in my head, this directly conflicts with one of the key points of the Declaration of Independence. I was reading an article on the BBC website about how an Iranian company managed to get technology from Oracle, Cisco and Hewlett Packard despite the sanctions on the Gulf state. I believe it to be grossly unfair to penalise American listed companies from trading with any nation they like and goes directly against the declaration’s statement “For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world” leveled against the British government in 1776.
I find it amazing that one of things that the country was founded upon 235 years ago is seemingly thrown away without consultation of the people they represent. If companies want to do business with one of the US governments “do not deal” list, I don’t see why the government should be able to enforce an embargo. If I was a US business owner and my profits were being hit by a government embargo, I would be mightily pissed off if my business was suffering because of federal meddling and would seriously consider registering my company outside of the USA.
While on the subject of the USA doing whatever the hell it wants; there have been a number of unmanned drone strikes inside Pakistan despite repeated calls from the Pakistani government to cease and desist. What makes this even worse is that President Barrack Obama himself has to authorise each drone strike, I thought that Obama would be good for America but it turns out that he is no different from any other US president (with the exception of Bill Clinton). Given that Pakistan has nuclear capability, Obama is playing a dangerous game willfully ignoring Pakistan’s request to cease the drone strikes. Again, America seems to think it’s untouchable, forgetting the lessons that went before, Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 attacks, it’ll happen again, sooner or later!
What these continuing drone attacks are is a general lack of respect for other countries wishes, if *any* country flew drones over the US and bombed targets, George W Bush’s house for example, he’s a war criminal (at least in my world), there would be a full on counter-strike (and I’m not talking about the game), but America is banking on it’s military might being a deterrent! Some may think that I am just American bashing; but it’s simply telling it as I see it (I don’t mince my words); if my home country, the UK were doing the same, they’d get a battering from my writings as well!
