I’m so f**king pissed off right now, RE: Yesterday’s plumbing issues…

As I wrote in yesterday’s “A little bit of this, a little bit of that!” blog, we had a clog in our garbage disposal system, which was taken care of early yesterday morning by Roto Rooter, but this morning I receive an Email from the agent dealing with this property, laying the blame at our door and saying that if it happens again, we’ll be liable for the cost, in which case, I will call my own plumber, not Roto Rooter as they are more expensive than local independent plumbers. If it’s really our fault, I’ll admit to it and pay the cost but won’t take the blame in this case because the plumbers said that the build up is very unlikely to have been caused in the three week’s we’ve lived here. We have also noted that the sinks drain faster than ever since Roto Rooter’s visit, which indicates to me a problem was just waiting to happen given the problematic waste disposal pipework!

Anyway, here’s the Email with names personally identifiable information removed.

Per my conversation with Roto Rooter yesterday in regards to the backed up sink, I was advised that the issue was from within your unit not upstairs. The plumber found the pipe to be clogged due to excess grease, vegetable peelings and meat. Please be advised as to what you dispose down the sink as this is a great expense for us. The total cost of the job was $206, we have taken care of this incident as an accommodation to you. For future issues such as this, if the findings are due to tenant cause, we will not be responsible for charges to repair.

And here’s my Email in reply:

In regard to the below message, we put very little down the disposal, we most certainly don’t drain grease or oil down the sinks. We refuse to take responsibility for this clog, the sink is now draining faster than it ever has since we have been in tenancy at <-- Address Removed -->, which would back up what the plumbers said to me on the day of service, given the amount of grease and food waste, it’s very unlikely that this build up was generated in the three weeks since taking possession. They also noted that the way the drainage system is designed, it’s more likely than most to clog easily. We have not used the garbage disposal any differently than anywhere else we have lived, this is the first issues we have ever experienced with any sort of plumbing. We will simply not use the disposal system from now on to avoid any further issues, given the warning from Roto Rooter on how easily the system can get clogged up due to design!
