If you read my blog previously; you’ll know that I begrudgingly bought an iPad 2 for my autistic son to be able to use iDevice specific apps. When I bought the device, it came with iOS5 which was pretty good, not as configurable as my Android devices but useful none-the-less. Now Apple in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the two best apps in the operating system, YouTube and Google Maps, hey Apple, if you ain’t broke, leave it the fuck alone and renew the licensing deal with Google!
Apple have added a clock & alarm system, which is very similar to Android’s clock and alarm system complete with stopwatch and countdown timer and a do not disturb feature plus other minor features to iOS6, the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 still doesn’t have Siri, which is supposed to be new and improved in iOS6, but as I don’t have it on my iPad 2, I can’t comment on it before or after iOS6.
Back to the two absolutely massive omissions; the removal of Google Maps, replaced by Apple’s own map technology based around TomTom’s map data. There are some huge issues with the application, such as towns being shown, sometimes hundreds of miles from where they should be and the satellite views feature very little detail because of excessive cloud and poor definition on the satellite image. It’s safe to say that the Apple Maps app is not ready for prime time, which is not very much in keeping with Apple’s polished image. Tens of thousands of Apple users are unhappy with the new maps on iDevices, calling for Google to release a maps application for the iDevice.
The other feature missing is the YouTube app, yes you can still use YouTube in the browser but that’s not the same as it’s not possible to have true full screen viewing as the address bar remains at the top. I searched the appstore for a YouTube app and I couldn’t find an actual YouTube app. Hopefully Google will release apps for maps and Youtube but I wouldn’t blame them if they didn’t and kept these two services for the Android platform, I believe Apple has scored an own goal here!
I believe the new features don’t make up for what has been lost in iOS6; and one of the biggest issues I had with iOS5 is still there in iOS6, the restrictions system is still very non user friendly as you can not temporarily disable restrictions without losing every setting. Sorry, Apple but iOS6 is a step backwards for iPad 2 and iPhone 4 (non-S) users, Siri is the only upgrade worth having!
Hi there would you mind sharing which blog platform
you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
I use WordPress, but the theme is a custom design that I created myself, it’s 100% unique.
