James Brent has finally done what he should have done at the end of last season; fired manager Carl Fletcher; who in my view should never have been given a permanent contract. I mean no disrespect to Fletcher, he did a reasonable job guiding Argyle to league survival in 2011/12 but a rookie manager is not the right person to push a club rebuilding from administration forward.
The news of Fletcher’s departure from Home Park came after the Pilgrims 2 – 1 defeat to Bristol Rovers on New Years day. Plymouth were undone by two first half goals; Conor Hourihane pulled one back in the 61st minute and almost leveled the scores, hitting the post, but it wasn’t to be, like many other games this season. Whoever comes in to replace Fletcher will have their job cut out for them; Argyle sit two points above the relegation places, will any experienced manager want the job?
I do wish Carl Fletcher all the best for the future; I simply think that he chose the wrong time and wrong club to launch his managerial career; being thrown in at the deep end at a club in administration was not the best launchpad for him. Hopefully he can get a coaching position in the future, maybe an assistant coaching position to learn his trade under an experienced manager!
