I always root my phones for the single reason of being able to remove all the crapware that comes pre-installed with most carrier cell phones, which can not be uninstalled from the device. I knew that OTA updates were not available because my S4 had been modified, e.g. rooted; but the Samsung Kies software informed me of an update when I connected the phone to my PC, so I went ahead and updated to Android 4.3, the update went well until reboot when I got an error message.
The error message was “System UIDs Inconsistent! UIDs on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable”; so I got into the recovery menu using Volume Up, Power and Home keys from off and wiped the data cache which removed the error message and the S4 booted. But Wi-Fi was not working; completely refused to turn on, which added insult to injury, restoring settings and apps from Google used by the majority of my 4G LTE data.
I thought, I’ll restore the Nandroid backup I made before updating but that wasn’t possible as the upgrade also wiped clockworkmod recovery; all I got was the default recovery, which failed to recognize the recovery files. I rooted the S4 on Android 4.3 as this version of Android breaks root and attempted to install clockworkmod recovery again but that broke recovery completely.
After a lot of searching and stress; I found a full T-Mobile Galaxy S4 Android 4.2.2 image to restore to the phone using ODIN; which allowed me to root, install clockworkmod recovery and restore my Nandroid backup. Then swiftly after that decided to try the now stable Cyanogenmod 10.2 which is running on the Android 4.3.1 codebase and so far, it’s all good. I tried Cyanogenmod previously but went back to Touchwiz because it still had a lot of bugs even at the release candidate stage.
This is a cautionary tale, heed my words or you’ll have a massive headache to content with; I got this fixed because I like to tinker and know my way around customization of Android phones and tablets.
Hello. I made the same mistake. But the only diffrence is i update to the 4.3 with my rooted s4 i337m via kies and it installed the knox kenel which for some reason removes the root access feture. So i tried to go back to the 4.2.2 everytime it would fail via odin. I also found that my recovery system says seandroid is not inforced as well as warrenty bit = recovery. So i imagin that my recovery is not compatible with the 4.4.2 kitkat. I used cf auto root with cwm flashed through rom manager (premium) and everything works well except a few things which ive been tinkering with. When iboot into recovery the back ups do well except for backing up my data then if i try to recover that back up, therecovery does well till i boot it up and i get a repeated message saying “process.gapps. has stopped” so then i would have to do a factory reset then it would work fine.
Another problem i have found is that my phone storage is being used up by 6gb of system files which im sure its the 4.4.2. Kitkat firmware then my phone having a problem. When i flashed the 4.2.2 the system data was only at 2gb which is fair. Another big problem i have found is that the system uid is consuming 59% which i can do nothing about so that sucks. Another small problem is that the mobike toggle is no longer in the notification bar which also sucks. I also modded my build prop for faster performance and better battery consumption. I added at least an extra 3 hours of music play per charge. Anyone have an idea of what i can do to decrease the system uid usage? Could i moddify the build prop or maybe even moddify the uid itself with an app? I have bricked this phone 3 times already because of the 4.3 update. I also removed that pesky knox kernel with a rooted uninstalling app. If need be, im willing to text ill email my number to u if u email me asking for my help or if u can help me.
Thanks
Luke
