Plymouth Argyle were denied three points away at Macclesfield on Tuesday evening by a late goal from former Pilgrim George Donnelly. This draw is the Pilgrims 11th draw of the season and their fourth in the last five games, but looking on the bright side, it also means five games undefeated!
Conor Hourihane fired the Pilgrims into the lead in the 71st minute after a number of Argyle players had shots blocked before the ball fell to Hourihane on the edge of the penalty area. Nick Chadwick had a chance to put the game beyond the home side but fired over the bar from three yards out; and Ashley Hemmings saw his shot tipped around the post by Michael Thomas.
Argyle dropped two points in literally the last moment of the game when Marcus Marshall sent a pin point cross into the box for Donnelly to head past Argyle keeper, Jake Cole five minutes into second half added time. What an incredibly cruel way to be denied the win, Argyle only needed to hold on for another 30 seconds to walk away from Moss Rose with three very valuable points!
But on reflection, a draw was probably the fairest result, both relegation threatened teams played well, but as an Argyle supporter, it’s very disappointing result. Argyle remain in 21st place, still three points behind Macclesfield. Argyle are still in the situation where survival is a real possibility but I feel that less draws and more wins are needed to achieve that, especially when playing at Home Park! Again, this season the Pilgrims have played better away from Home!
