Liverpool suffered their second successive defeat to league strugglers against Wigan at Anfield. The visitors claimed all three points because the Liverpool players were tired according to Kenny Dalglish, I think that he’s making excuses for poor performances from the Reds, time for a serious rethink, Liverpool should not be losing to teams in the bottom three of the Premier League!
The Reds were missing their cutting edge today, not really doing too much in the final third of the field, attacks were fizzling out in midfield. The visitors went ahead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, Shaun Maloney putting the ball into the back of the net after Martin Skrtel unfairly challenged Victor Moses and the scoreline remained 0 – 1 as the teams went in at half time!
Liverpool started the second half brightly and Luis Suarez leveled the scores in the 47th minute from Steven Gerrard’s pass into the box. This sparked hopes of a Liverpool fightback but it wasn’t to be. Gary Caldwell put Wigan back into the lead from very close range in 63rd minute from James McCarthy’s pass. Suarez did have a goal disallowed for handball before Caldwell netted what turned out to be the winner. Liverpool need to stop hemorrhaging points, shocking home form!
Plymouth Argyle played out a lacklustre scoreless draw with fellow strugglers Northampton Town, Argyle Stalwart Paul Wotton came closest to scoring, hitting the woodwork from a 25 yard free-kick. While Argyle keeper Jake Cole made a couple of good saves to deny the home side three points. Another point for the cause although failing to collect three points does mean the Pilgrims drop one place to 22nd but it remains tight at the bottom, six points cover positions 18 – 24.
